“My water just broke and I’m having contractions” – My Wife read aloud while reading What To Expect When You’re Expecting in bed…I was half asleep, Well I’m awake now.
With help from my family, I was able to give my wife an awesome baby shower. We decided to go with a Toy Story theme. The idea was to have it resemble Toy Story but making it feel less like a kids birthday party and more of a “pinterest” feel while staying true to the colors of the theme. We cooked food and planned games for our guests. The baby shower was a huge success.
My mom and grandma surprised us with this amazing diaper cake
These pins were given to each guest. Every time a guest would get caught saying the word “baby” they would have to forfeit their pin to whoever caught them.
Some other games were “Name That Song”, each song had the word “baby” in the title. And “Name That Baby” where guests brought baby pictures of themselves and we all had to guess who was who.
We used these blocks to have guests try to guess the name of the baby.
For party favors we gave out popcorn labeled “Ready to Pop”
Dunder and Munster made great hosts.
We are about 7 weeks out, things are getting real. For now the room has a nice calm feel to it, the toys and clothes sit calmly in place waiting to be used and the noise level is very low. During the day we sometimes hang out in the room and plan things. We talk about where we will play and how we will organize certain items. Today my wife is researching strollers while I work on putting shelves on the wall. Dunder and Munster relax and try to enjoy the calmness of the room while they can.
I changed my first diaper this weekend. Now I just have to practice on a real baby. Shouldn’t be too hard huh? As a kid I was pretty good at Super Soaker fights in the school yard, so hopefully those skills apply.
Since this will be my first time as a father, I’ve been taking a bunch of classes in the community to help me prepare as much as possible. This weekend was Newborn Care 101 and I found it very helpful. I seriously had no idea what to do with the baby once we bring him home, but now I feel a little better now. Other classes that my wife and I have taken are Intro To Breast Feeding, CPR, and Labor and Delivery. The classes take up a good portion of the weekend, but I highly recommend them.
The class also got me thinking about an item that I hadn’t yet added to my todo list. An item that signifies that we are running out of time and should be ready to go any day now. This item really makes me nervous, I guess its because I know that after it is complete, the next time I will use it is when I am in a panic running out the door with my wife, but now is the time pack:
Today marks two months until the due date. I must say that no matter how much I think I am prepared, how much I do, it doesn’t help the anxiety that comes with expecting your first child. I guess its because no matter how prepared I think I am, I know that it will never be enough.
We are two months out. I thought I was nervous before, but I clearly didn’t know what nervous meant.
One thing that helps is to prepare, even if it is something minor like buying clothes for the little one. It just makes me feel like I am one step closer, or I have one less item on my to-do list.
